Hip-Hop Honors

HIP-HOP Honors

"Any MC trying to be that lyrical should go ask Smokey Robinson for a miracle."

With that said the VH1 Hip-Hop Honors was off the hook. I didn’t expect such a great show thinking back on last year’s performers who did the artists songs for them. However this years show, they allowed the artist to perform as well. First up, it was L.L. Cool J. Nelly who looks like the modern day clone of Cool J. did an ok job. He forgot the lyrics on some parts but the performance was solid. Ciera the new princess of hip-hop was performing with a pair of jeans that was fitting oh-so tight but was eye candy for all to see. I didn’t mind either LOL. I was clearly focused on that. Thank you God, for the black woman! Ok let me get back on track.
The black eye of the evening was Kanye West, who I like but it wasn’t his platform to perform his latest song on a show for hip-hop pioneers. Ice T and Snoop was ok but should have left the Bishop Don Juan home with all that green on. Grand Master Flash and the Furious Five were good too. On that set, Jazzy Jeff from my hometown of Philly and Kid Capri performed with Flash. Jeff Stood out of course that’s why he is the Magnificent Jazzy Jeff minus my boy Will from West Philly. Trust me they will be honored soon! Salt and Pepa and Spin were great with Envouge. The women haven’t performed together in years. 6 for Salt and Pepa and 10 for Envouge.
Now to the best show of the evening. Black Thought of the Roots and Common performed the songs of the Greatest M.C. of all time, in my opinion. Big Daddy Kane who has a wide volume of material was honored. T.I. also performed for Kane doing Smooth operator. It was ok it was a set up of what was to come. Black Thought set it off with the song "Set it off."He rocked it with his band The Roots. Everybody was standing, including me. It was magical! Enter Common, he took it over with RAW and he killed it. Common topped his performance off with doing a windmill on the floor. HOT! Then the man himself, Blackanova, The prince of darkness, Kane Asiatic, The Smooth operator etc. came on and did his thing with one of his dancers. The crowd was on their feet the whole time when he rapped Warm it up Kane. The late Notorious B.I.G. was being honored too, however before that happened his mother, Voletta Wallace rocked with Kane, Common, Black Thought and T.I. Kane is Brooklyn finest and the greatest of all time in my book. Kane stole the show as L.L. and the rest of the Honorees that were sitting in the balcony rocked and rapped with him. Man it took me back to 1988 when I was 18. Damn. That was the beginning of raps golden era. Next up I pray will be Rakim, MC Lyte, Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince and Naughty By Nature. Stay tuned for that show!
